Japan's national police chief resigned on Thursday after accepting responsibility for the shooting of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during his election campaign last month.

The announcement by National Police Agency chief Itaru Nakamura came as his agency released a report on how it failed to protect Abe's life on July 8. The former Japanese prime minister was shot dead during an election campaign.

Foreign media say that according to the police report, there were flaws in Abe's security, due to which the attacker failed to kill him by shooting him from behind.

Nakamura has said that he took the former prime minister's death seriously and submitted his resignation to the National Public Safety Commission.
